Notes and Sources

Percentage of households with difficulty at some time during the year providing enough food for all members due to a lack of resources. A subset of food insecure households, those with low food security, experienced reduced food intake and disrupted eating patterns. The yearly food security report published by the USDA uses data from the Census Bureau's annual Current Population Survey. Because the sample size is small, data are presented using three-year averages. For example, the 2012 numbers represent an average of 2010-2012 findings.
Data are available at the state level and go back to 2001.
