Yesterday evening in a vote of 64 to 36, the Senate passed the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2013, the deal struck by Senate Budget Chair Patty Murray and House Budget Chair Paul Ryan last week. The bill now heads to the president's desk to be signed into law.
As we noted in a recent blog post, this legislation does not deal with a couple very important issues. It does not extend emergency unemployment benefits for the long-term unemployed, and it includes no agreement about the farm bill. Upcoming farm bill legislation may contain cuts to SNAP, the food stamp program; a deal on the farm bill is now projected to happen in early 2014.
