Total federal taxes paid. This number includes income and self-employment taxes, payroll taxes, business taxes, estate taxes, gift taxes, and excise taxes. The total amount represents gross collections minus refunds (including refundable tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit).
Data are available at the state level and go back to 2002.

Note: the colors that represent high and low values on the map are re-calibrated for each year.
