FEATURING LINDSAY KOSHGARIAN – In what seems to be yet another blow to low-income Americans, the Trump Administration announced on Thursday that states could begin imposing work requirements on recipients of Medicaid. Medicaid is a federal government assistance program that aids millions of low-income Americans.
The work requirements fulfill a long-term Republican ideal of making poor Americans jump through many hoops, suffer undignified scrutiny, and be forced to work in a stagnant economy in order to be part of a tax-payer funded social safety net.
Similar requirements are in place for recipients of food stamps, or the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP). In fact such an approach goes back to Bill Clinton’s administration, which signed off on work requirements for welfare recipients.
