This data story honors Shannon McLeish, who is highlighting rising unemployment, homelessness, and increasingly scarce social services available in Volusia County, FL. That county has a 12% unemployment rate—a third higher than the national average of 9.1%. The database also shows that the average Volusia resident receives $18.30 in monthly food stamp assistance and monthly welfare outlays average $17.30 per resident living below the poverty line.
